Benthic assemblages are more predictable than fish assemblages at an island scale

چکیده

Abstract Decades of research have revealed relationships between the abundance coral reef taxa and local conditions, especially at small scales. However, a rigorous test covariation requires robust dataset collected across wide environmental or experimental gradients. Here, we surveyed spatial variability in densities major functional groups 122 sites along 70 km expanse leeward, forereef habitat Curaçao southern Caribbean. These data were used to degree which community composition could be predicted based on assumed site-specific anthropogenic, physical, ecological conditions. In general, models less power describe fish biomass than cover builders (R 2 best-fit models: 0.25 [fish] 0.64 [reef builders]). The total benthic was best described by physical (wave exposure relief) (turf algal height recruit density) predictors. No metric anthropogenic pressure related variation builder cover. contrast, showed consistent (albeit weak) association with predictors (fishing diving pressure). As is typical most gradients, patterns both density spatially autocorrelated. Residuals from model for retained signature autocorrelation while removed autocorrelation, thus reinforcing our finding that better able biomass. seek understand communities scale management units (i.e., kilometer- island-scales), distinct scale-dependent perspectives will needed when considering different groups.

Biomass spectra in benthic fish assemblages in the Benguela System

B~ornass spectra in the different benthic fish assemblages at depths between 100 and 800 m off the coast of Namibia were studied over a p e r ~ o d of 3 yr These assemblages were located in areas spanning active upwelling centres on the shelf and zones of lower productiv~ty on the lower slope. The slopes of the curves for the normallzed size distributions were related to zonal productivity and ...

Rapid biotic homogenization of marine fish assemblages

The role human activities play in reshaping biodiversity is increasingly apparent in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the responses of entire marine assemblages are not well-understood, in part, because few monitoring programs incorporate both spatial and temporal replication. Here, we analyse an exceptionally comprehensive 29-year time series of North Atlantic groundfish assemblages monitored ...

Testing metapopulation models with stream-fish assemblages

We assessed the utility of simple metapopulation models in an analysis of a decade (1976–86) of stream-fish censuses at 10 sites on the Cimarron River, Oklahoma. This assemblage is a good candidate for metapopulation analysis because there was substantial annual turnover of population, with frequent local extinctions and recolonizations. However, annual probabilities of colonization and extinct...

Fish Assemblages of Mediterranean Marine Caves

Fish assemblages associated with 14 marine caves and adjacent external rocky reefs were investigated at four Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along the coasts of Italy. Within the caves sampling was carried out in different sub-habitats: walls, ceilings, bottoms and ends of caves. On the whole, 38 species were recorded inside the 14 caves investigated. Eighteen species were exclusively found insid...

Testing macroecology models with stream-fish assemblages

We measured species-level probabilities of colonization and extinction from a decade (1976–86) of stream-fish censuses at 10 sites on the Cimarron River, Oklahoma. In a macroecological analysis that controlled for phylogenetic relationships among the 41 species, we used body size, average population size, area of geographic range and distance to the centre of the geographic range as correlates ...
